Your Resume Precedes Your Personality
“Your resume gets you in the door, but your personality gets you the job.” It is important you remember that slogan, but do not forget that your resume precedes your personality. You can be the most charismatic, fun, out-going, professional person in the world, but unless you can get an interview, you will never be able to show that great personality off. Recruiters get thousands of applications a year, and unless your resume stands out and is exceptional, not just with content but also organization, do not expect a call back. It is important to be able to nail an interview, but you first have to give yourself that opportunity.
There are many websites and career counselors who can help you with your resume. Take advantage of them! Look at colleagues’ resumes to see what you like and dislike. Here are a few things to remember as well: Tailor your resume to the job you are applying for with either a cover page or editing your resume itself. A finance recruiter does not care much that you have taken courses in earthquakes and volcanoes. Also, always keep your resume up to date and be prepared to answer questions about the claims you make. Most importantly, try to keep your resume one page in length and highlight your most significant and relevant experience.
