What’s Your Most Embarrassing School Moment?
I grew up in a rural mountain town in northern Utah where everyone knew each other. My mother was one of two teachers who taught 4th grade at the local elementary school and I prayed every day during my 3rd grade year that I wouldn’t have my mother as my teacher. It didn’t work.
Anyone that has had their parent as a teacher knows the torture it involves. I had to sit on the front row, raise my hand for every question and when I did poorly on an exam I not only got a lecture in the back of the classroom but at dinner as well. You may think these events tame in nature but I assure you, as a 9-year old girl they are indeed traumatic.
The most embarrassing moment came on the day of school pictures. For most parents, class pictures are very important and subsequently they dress their children in their best clothes. It was no different for me; my mother had put me in my best church clothes for the photo. Picture time came and along with all my classmates I got in line. I had been there no more than five minutes when my mother came along, pulled me out of line and proceeded to spit wash my face in front of all my peers. I wiggled and writhed to get away from her strong grasp but to no avail. I was called spit-face all the way through college.
