Cutting Down TV Time Can Lead to Better Vision

New research with children links time spent outdoors to better vision. The study shows that children who spent more time outside and away from the television were less likely to develop myopia. Researchers are quick to admit that they are as yet unable to determine whether too much indoor activity actually causes poor eyesight nor what the exact mechanism may be.

About one third of the American population suffers from myopia, which is the inability to see things clearly from a distance. The condition appears to be caused by genetics and environment. It is more common in people who engage in a lot of near focusing work.

The study showed that children who developed myopia spent less time in outdoor activities. They spent an average of 8.3 hours a week in outdoor activities compared to the 12.6 hours spent by children with no vision problems. Those with myopia also watch more television, 12.5 hours vs. 8.4 hours per week.
