Company Internships
Tuesday, August 12th, 2008More companies should sponsor internships. It is relatively free labor and it provides a service to the intern that they could not find elsewhere. Also, it is like a very long interview, where the potential employer can evaluate the intern by their work and effort, not simply by a twenty-minute interview. Yet many companies and organizations still think interns are a waste of time, or just do not want to take the time to help an intern because they are too busy. There simply seems to be too many people who want to be an intern and too few companies who want an intern.
This problem can be resolved personally though. It is possible to set up your own internship with a company that normally does not hire interns, it just takes a lot of effort and/or an “in” with the company. I was told once by a career counselor that many companies do not publish internship opportunities, but would be willing to hire one if you presented your case well enough. Sometimes a good thing to do is print off about fifteen resumes and walk around to some of the companies you are looking to intern with, and just walk in and drop your resume off with the receptionist. You never know, you may just get lucky.
