In times of economic hardship, many people look to supplement their income through the use of direct marketing businesses or “easy” to start home companies. It seems like a good idea because you get paid for what you do and you do not have to rely on a company to hire you or not fire you. Individuals have made money off of these ventures, but they are few and far between, and usually do not make money in the way they think they are going to make money.
There are thousands of books about companies and businesses you can start at your home. Many contain some valuable ideas, however, these books underplay how hard it may be to start this venture or how hard it is to actually succeed. These books can be fun to read through and a few people may be able to start a reliable and steady business, but do not rely on them to support a family. Direct marketing companies are similar in that they promise it is easy to be successful if you only apply yourself, but in reality once you have sold your friends and family all the supplements or clothing they will buy, it is hard to maintain a constant stream of income. Also, many direct marketing companies say you make money from your own sales, but in actuality you make money from recruiting people to help sell products and you get a percent of what they sell, hence the name pyramid scheme.
