Medical Malpractice Results in 27-Year-Old Woman’s Death

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

In 2007 a 27-year old Nevada woman died from complications of cancer. The big news is her doctor misdiagnosed her on several occasions. After a long court trial a jury awarded the woman’s family $2.5 million in a medical malpractice suit. The suit is thought to be the largest in the last five years.

Elisa Sanchez knew something was wrong when she found blood in her stool and was having pain whenever she needed to use the bathroom. When she went to her local doctor, Steven Lampinen, for help he repeatedly told her she was suffering from hemorrhoids. Three years later Sanchez died of colon cancer, not hemorrhoids.

The jury found that Lampinen was responsible for the negligence that contributed to her death and that he “fell below the standard of care.” Nevada caps how much a medical malpractice lawsuit awards at $350,000 for pain and suffering. The jury awarded $2 million in economic losses and future lost wages.

There is method to the make-up madness. Simple mistakes are made by women every day when trying to make themselves look beautiful. There are a few basic steps that every women should know before getting made up.

First, make sure your face is clean before you apply any makeup. Cleanse, tone and moisturize before you put on any makeup. Next, if you need to, feel free to use concealer on any of those blemishes or problem spots. Cover them up by just dabbing a bit of concealer over them.

Foundation can be very easy to mess up. Never use your hands to apply foundation, your hands can contain oil and bacteria that you really don’t want on your face. Use a sponge or a brush and remember that less is more when it comes to foundation.

Lastly, finish off your foundation with a matching powder, blending it in circles to give your skin a polished look. The great thing about applying makeup is its a mistake friendly process. If you mess up or put too much foundation on, you can always wipe it off and start again.

What to Get Your Valentine!

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

Since Valentine’s Day is upon us and I feel that flowers are the gift of the uncreative masses, I have listed a couple very, very cool gifts you can give this season.

From the website www.singleserveespresso.com comes a very cool and green way to print documents, its the Coffee Printer. This gadget uses spend coffee grounds as an ink source. All you have to do is drop the grounds in, insert the paper, and move the lever back and forth over the paper to make the image or text.

If your sweetheart has a hard time getting up in the morning, www.coolest-gadgets.com suggests buying them the Simon Alarm Clock. This alarm clock is in the style of the old 80s memory game Simon. In the morning to turn off your alarm you actually have to beat simon by remember the pattern of colored pads.

Finally, if you’re looking for something practical and stylish for your home, how about the Bookshelf Lamp. Also on www.coolest-gadgets.com this end table lamp would be a great addition for those of us who just stack books next to the lamp on our end table.

My Kind of Diet

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

I think I may have found my dream diet. It’s called the “All You Can Eat 7 Day Diet.” Sounds good right? Well here are the details of what you can eat on which day.

Monday- All the fruit you want, except bananas
Tuesday- All the vegetables you want- you can use soy sauce, vinegar or mustard
Wednesday- All the fruit and vegetables you want
Thursday- 5 bananas with 5 glasses of milk
Friday- Four 3 oz. beef/chicken or fish steaks with fresh vegetables
Saturday- Four 3 oz. beef steaks with fresh vegetables
Sunday- Four 3 oz. beef steaks with fresh vegetables

It’s really too bad that this type of dieting would probably lead to constipation, heart disease, obesity, and other problems. Hmm. I’ll have to think of something a little healthier.

Why Do Some Women Need Thousands of Skin Care Products?

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

My roommate is a girl. Probably the best roommate I’ve ever had. I think of her as my younger sister. We get along great, have the same taste in music, movies, literature and men. There is one aspect of our relationship that drives me nuts. Why is it that some women need 347 different skin care products? You may think I’m exaggerating but I’m not.

I just don’t understand what possible use one could have for basically the same product in a different bottle. If your skin cream, body lotion, eye cream and face mask all of the same four ingredients in them, why aren’t they interchangeable?

Is this a big conspiracy by the makers of creams and lotions to get you to buy more? Do we need to have a dateline investigation into skin care products?

One Step Forward in Men’s Health

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

In a recent study, scientists in San Francisco believe they have grown entire prostates in mice using only a single adult stem cell. Thus far the success of the study has not been proven in humans but does show a big step forward in prostate health for men. Researchers believe this could dramatically change what we know about prostate cancer.

Stem cells have captured the attention of scientists in recent years because of the potential to grow specific cells with the purpose of replacing damaged or diseases tissue. Though there is a large controversy around stem cell research due in part to the use of embryonic cells. These cells are known as pluripotent and have the ability to become any tissue in the human body. There are also unipotent stem cells which have the ability to be divided into specific cells.

Yoga vs. Pilates

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

I made the mistake just recently of assuming that yoga and pilates were the same thing. You would have thought I asked for an eight ball of crack cocaine from some of the looks of disgust I received. Once again, I’m going to have to play the ignorant card. I had no idea yoga and pilates were so different. To aid anyone else out there who also believed they were the same thing, let me give you a quick run-down so you don’t get similar looks in public when you ask about it.

Yoga is designed to unite the body, mind and spirit. Yoga involves posing in various position with the purpose of promoting the feeling of well-being and strength. Practices may also include meditation, reflection, study and other classic elements.

Pilates is used as a training program to enhance muscle strength and stability. It emphasizes control, precision and concentration. Movements are not performed rapidly or repeated excessively as the focus is on quality not quantity. You will often hear pilates fanatics talking about their “core” which is the abdominal muscles, lower back and buttocks.
