Proper Diagnosis
Sunday, October 5th, 2008Several months ago I had a cancer scare. I felt a lump one day in the shower and started to freak out. The very next day I walked into a clinic and asked to see a doctor. As I waited in the exam room, all the worst scenarios began to run through my mind. What if it is cancer and they have to perform surgery? What if the cancer has spread?
The doctor finally came in and performed the examination. She confirmed my fears and said she felt something as well and immediately made an appointment for me to get an ultrasound across town. They could diagnose me with the proper equipment, she told me. I raced over to another clinic where they performed ultrasounds and waited again. The lump ended up just being diagnosed as a benign growth, but it still reminds me today to be diligent about getting routine checkups. Make sure to perform self-examinations as well as go for your routine checkups, and be sure to tell your doctor about any family history of cancer.
