Antioxidants Help with Aging
Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008I opened up my mother’s fridge to find box after box of blueberries. I wasn’t sure what to think. Was there a sale? Did a blueberry truck break down outside my mother’s house and while the driver was on the phone my mother raided the truck? The answer was not nearly that exciting. My mother has stocked up on blueberries due to the antioxidants they contain.
The USDA has released a list of the 20 best antioxidant foods we should be eating. Wild blueberries rank No. 2 right behind small red beans and kidney beans. I’ll be completely honest, I had no idea what antioxidants did. My mother sat me down and explained that antioxidants can help reduce the risk of degenerative diseases associated with aging. They also help boost our immune systems, something we all pay attention to in the winter months. I asked my mother if I could have one of the multiple boxes of blueberries she had bought, but then she told me I was young and could buy my own.
