Tysabri, a multiple sclerosis drug given by infusion, has now been linked to three cases of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, or PML. The two original patients who developed PML were taking the drug Avonex at the same time they took Tysabri to treat the symptoms of multiple sclerosis. The third patient was discovered to have PML in an autopsy, after originally being misdiagnosed as having a brain tumor. It was announced in March 2005 that this patient was taking Tysabri to treat Crohn's disease, and was not taking Avonex. Tysabri was pulled from the market in February of 2005.
