OxyContin is classified as a "controlled substance" narcotic painkiller approved for the treatment of moderate to severe pain. Due to misrepresentation and failure to warn the users about the highly addictive nature of this drug, OxyContin has been linked to over 400 deaths. Once abused, the user develops a tolerance to its effects so larger doses are needed to elicit the desired sensation. An FDA Black Box Warning, the most severe warning issued, had been added to OxyContin labels warning of the "abuse liability similar to morphine".
